From Memphis to Philadelphia: Advancing My Purpose in Paramedical Areola Restoration

This past week, I had the incredible opportunity to travel to Philadelphia to complete my Advanced Areola Certification in paramedical tattooing, and I’m still processing just how impactful this experience truly was.

This wasn’t just any training.

This trip was a reminder of why I do what I do.

As a registered nurse and paramedical tattoo artist in Memphis, my passion lives at the intersection of medical care, artistry, and compassion. Every client who sits in my chair brings a story — and many of those stories involve cancer, surgery, trauma, and the long, emotional journey of rebuilding both body and identity.

That’s exactly why I chose to continue my education at one of the most respected medical tattoo training programs in the country.

Why advanced areola training matters

Areola restoration is one of the most specialized and emotionally sensitive areas of paramedical tattooing. It’s not cosmetic — it’s restorative.

For many breast cancer survivors and reconstruction patients, the loss of the nipple-areola complex can feel like the final, unfinished chapter of a long medical journey. Advanced 3-D areola tattooing gives clients the opportunity to reclaim something that was taken from them through illness or surgery — in a way that feels natural, respectful, and deeply personal.

During my training in Philadelphia, we focused on:

• Advanced color theory for diverse skin tones

• Realistic 3-D nipple and areola illusion techniques

• Scar tissue behavior and how it affects pigment retention

• Post-surgical skin considerations

• Working with clients who have undergone mastectomy and reconstruction

• Creating symmetry and realism when anatomy has changed

This level of training goes far beyond surface-level tattoo technique. It requires an understanding of healing skin, surgical history, tissue quality, and the emotional weight that many clients carry into the room.

My nursing background and advanced wound care experience play a huge role in how I approach this work. In Philadelphia, I was able to deepen both my technical and clinical knowledge — so I can continue offering safer, more predictable, and more beautiful outcomes for my clients back home in Memphis.

We focused on trauma-informed care — not just artistic results.

When someone comes to you after cancer treatment or reconstructive surgery, you’re not only creating a visual result. You’re holding space for vulnerability, grief, relief, and hope — often all at once.

That responsibility is something I take very seriously. I am always honored to take part in this process for my clients.

Bringing this advanced care back to Memphis

When I opened Sittin Pretty Ink, my vision was always bigger than traditional permanent makeup. I wanted to build a space where people feel safe, seen, and cared for — especially those navigating recovery and life after medical procedures.

Bringing this advanced areola restoration training back to the Memphis community means:

• Expanding access to high-quality paramedical tattoo services locally

• Reducing the need for clients to travel out of state for specialized care

• Offering breast cancer survivors a more complete, compassionate recovery experience

• Supporting surgeons and healthcare providers with a trusted restorative referral partner

Memphis deserves access to this level of artistry and medical-based care.

I am proud to be one of the artists in this region offering advanced areola restoration, scar camouflage, and restorative tattoo services backed by formal training and clinical experience.

More than a certification — a calling

There were moments during training that reminded me exactly why I chose this path.

I’ve always been drawn to work that allows me to serve people during vulnerable seasons of their lives. Nursing taught me how to care for the body. Art taught me how to restore confidence. Paramedical tattooing allows me to bring both together in a deeply personal way.

For many of my future clients, areola restoration will be the final step after months — sometimes years — of surgeries, appointments, treatments, and emotional healing.

Being trusted with that final step is not something I take lightly.

A space built on compassion and expertise

At Sittin Pretty Ink, every client experience is built around safety, education, and individualized care. Each consultation includes a detailed review of medical history, skin condition, and personal goals so that every treatment plan is created intentionally — not rushed.

Whether you are seeking:

• 3-D areola restoration after mastectomy or reconstruction

• Scar camouflage after surgery or injury

• Or a provider who understands both the medical and emotional sides of your journey

My goal is always the same: to provide the best in quality and care while for those who are cleared and ready for this last step.

A big THANK YOU to Mandy Sauler at the Sauler Institute for the giving me the best hands on experience and training. Im so happy we finally met and honored I was able to learn from true legends. Mandy had taken my call a few years back when I saw her interview on the news (I was searching up areola tattooing and she popped up on the screen). From that point on I began working towards my goals for taking my nursing career into a new path that could fuel my passion for art and my love for nursing and supporting each other.

Thank you, Philadelphia

This trip challenged me, inspired me, and strengthened my commitment to providing paramedical tattooing in Memphis and the Mid-South. I returned home to Memphis with advanced skills, a deeper understanding of restorative care, and an even stronger passion for serving my community.

If you or someone you love is exploring areola restoration or paramedical tattoo services, I would be honored to walk alongside you through that next step of healing.
